Regional Hero ~ Shiraz

cdwia_logoWine has been made in the Canberra District for 160 years. It’s only been in the last ten years however that it’s made its real mark on the wine map with the cementing of its reputation for Shiraz and Shiraz Viogner blends.

Canberra, a cool-climate region, is known for producing Shiraz with elegant lifted flavours on par with the style of the Rhone Valley in France.

Canberra is also known for its Riesling, hosting the International Riesling Challenge each year, with wineries such as Helm paving the way for the development of Riesling in the area.

The tranquil rural countryside around the ACT is home to 140 vineyards with more than 30 boutique cellar doors.

Canberra District WineThe Canberra District wine region has achieved wide recognition for its Shiraz and Riesling wines both nationally and internationally, but because of the geographic
diversity of the wine region, it offers much more in variety and style.  Truly Liquid Geography.

The region is home to 30 boutique cellar doors, most of which are only a 30 minute drive from the city, and you can still meet the winemaker and owners when you visit. There are ten Halliday 5-star wineries in the District, and Halliday recently named 19 Canberra District wines in his ‘Top 100 Wines of NSW’.

With the national capital on its door step, the region offers 5 star accommodation, superb dining experiences as well as some of the nation’s major attractions and cultural centres.
