Southern Highlands

Regional Hero ~ Pinot Noir

An exciting new cool-climate region, the Southern Highlands region surrounds Mittagong and Bowral and is gaining much attention for its Pinot Noir. This region came to fruition in the 1990s when wine growers became interested in the region and the advantages of high altitude vineyards in which Pinot Noir in particular excels. There are now more than 60 vineyards in the Southern Highlands with over 350 hectares under cultivation with increasing grafting to Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris. Wineries include new boutiques such as Tertini, Diamond Creek Estate, Blue Metal and Pulpit Rock Estate. Indeed, Cuttaway Hill collected the 2008 Winestate Best Sparkling Red.

As the Southern Highland’s Wine Trail grows and winery visitation increases, several wineries are now open for public tasting including Tertini; Fifth Chapter by appointment and Diamond Creek Estate on Sundays.
